Music Timeline

Over the years music videos have developed and many different aspects have changed in them.

50's
Ray Charles
In the 50's there was a variety of different music genres including classic pop, R&B, rock and roll, blues, country music, jazz and folk music. Music videos did not emerge in this era and many people watched musicals and loved watching people sing and dance in the musicals. 
60's
The Beatles
The music difference between the 1950's and 1960's was typically defined as being when the "British Invasion" took place in American Music. A number of British groups including The Beatles broke into the music market in the early 1960's. There was a high need to send videos of these bands around the world as they would only be able to be at one place at a time. This allowed people across the world to view and enjoy different bands records.  
70's
Led Zeppelin
Top of the Pop's of started in the 1970's and cemented the UK as the music capital of the world. All bands wanted to perform and be on Top of the Pop's. There was also a number of deaths that saddened the world. The deaths of Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Also the break up of The Beatles occurred. 
80's
Michael Jackson
MTV launched in the US and in the record industry, music videos started to have a large effect. Genre's such as hard rock and heavy metal grew more popular, and also hip-hop continued to show a strong influence in the industry. 
90's
The Spice Girls
In the 90's, girl group The Spice Girls made a breakthrough  in America and 
become the most commercially successful since The Beatles. Industrial music was also on the rise with  the worldwide popularity of Ministry and Marilyn Manson.
21st Century 
Lady Gaga
In  2005, the launch of Youtube made it easier for people to view online videos faster and much easier.   Such websites had a profound effect on the viewing of music videos; some artists began to see success as a result of videos seen mostly or entirely online. In 2010 Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' became the most viewed video on youtube with 130 million views and over 350 million views by early 2011.
