Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin believes that there are 6 features that are in music videos. These are the following:

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. E.g. Stage performance in metal video and a dance routine for a boy or girl band.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. An example is Willow Smith - Whip my hair. When in the video she whips her hair.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artists. An example of this is Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking. An example again is Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines.

6. There is often intertextual reference.
